Thursday, June 19: A Night of Pretty/Arty/Garagey Indie-Rock

ASIAN BABE ALERT
ABA is the power-garage pop duo of Leslie Anne Case (vocals & drums) and Tom Scanlon (guitar and occasional warble). Equally inspired by the romanticism of Fairport and the pummel of Burma, ABA delivers a messy and melodic sound with spartan instrumentation. Other influences include the Buzzcocks, Kinks, Strokes, and Joni Mitchell. Leslie is a yogini who has, in the full bloom of midlife, taken up drums in a rock band for the first time. Tom also plays in the Anchormen and Scrapple. The name is meant neiether as self-reference nor slander, yet merely states "a simple universal truth."

THE IN OUT
An awesome and snarly band of Fall fans, rocking like nobody has since Rough Trade 1981.

THE PEE WEE FIST
The Pee Wee Fist (named for a Hong Kong martial arts film featuring a three foot tall ninja) has been "kicking" around since 1995. It's the name singer/songwriter/guitarist Pete Fitzpatrick has utilized whether he was playing solo or corralling numerous others to learn his songs ad hoc for various gigs in and around Boston. Eventually the same musicians kept showing at these shows, becoming the current band line-up of six. Kimchee Records recently released the band's first "official" CD, Flying, to rave reviews. The record is a textural rainbow of sound endowed with enigmatic and whimsical imagery. The mood changes with every song. Some convey a sadder, simpler acoustic aesthetic; others rollick or sway with mulit-instrumental fervor. Through it all is the element of surprise, as Fitzpatrick and company expertly steer us around indie-rock cliché while employing some of the genre's formal styles (i.e. alt-country, slack-pop, classic and post-rock, etc.) to achieve something remarkably singular.

THE MARY REILLYS
Ben Hall (guitar, vox) Deb Klein (bass, guitar, vox) Keira Flynn (drums). Jangly pop, both mellow and bouncy; harmonies.ÊComparisons? Hmmm... Yo La Tengo, R.E.M., Neutral Milk Hotel, Violent Femmes (?). The Reillys have a 7 Song Mini-LP and a track on the latest Mister Records compilation.
