To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com OPERATORS TO PLAY RARE SHOW SUMMARY: Operators reunite. Nice and Easy set up shop at The Abbey Lounge. Plunge Into Death tours, beginning at Zuzu. Somerville (Reuters) -- As the first wisps of smoke signaled the end of a vote in Handstand Command's Headquarters on Tuesday, there was an audible gasp from the thousands gathered to witness the decision. Black smoke from burning ballot papers rising from the thin metal chimney is the age-old signal for the Operators staying home and watching Law and Order reruns, but white would indicate the band would perform THIS SATURDAY at The Abbey Lounge. But the excitement on the packed streets of Inman Square soon turned to uncertainty as the crowds struggled for the second day running to agree on the color of the smoke -- which reveals the outcome of the vote -- against the cloudy Medford sky. "It looked black, then white, then black. People started cheering. I thought I was going to have heart failure," Karen Martello, a tourist from Jamaica Plain said breathlessly, as she squinted to see the smoke still rising from the roof. People said "white," and "black," then some began to chant "it's white, it's white," and a group of the members of Choo Choo La Rouge started jumping up and down, pushing their fists in the air.
"It is decided. The Operators shall 'rock out'."
RECORDINGS:
******************** Lots of shows. Operators reunite. Nice N' Easy hold it down at PAs Lounge. To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Hear ye, hear ye-- this Saturday, November 20 at PA's Lounge, you are invited to witness what very well may be the Operators' LAST SHOW EVER! We're not guaranteeing anything-- guitarist Paul has only moved 3 hours away, after all -- but this is no Jay-Z stylee "retirement." The Ops do not have a comeback tour with R. Kelly scheduled for next week. So see 'em while you can. The show is also a CD release party for the Operators' new disc, "The Light and the Dark," and a chance to see guitarist Emily rock it out right DESPITE her very recent Kurt Schilling-esque ankle surgery. Emily, you've got the heart of a champion! Lending a rock'n'roll hand for the Ops' send-off will be Shenzou 5 (Yummy swirly guitar pop featuring Seana Carmody and four other rock luminaries - bask in their glow) and Squids (sharp post-proto-no-wave sounds, see 'em now so you can say you saw 'em when). Light refreshments will be served, but one ought to arrive having eaten. Earlier that evening offers a rare opportunity to see Plounge into Death -- Plunge's gentler, more velvety, more art-gallery friendly cousin-- at Zeitgeist Gallery. Preceding and postceding the musical interlude will be slideshows by comic artists Keith Knight and Tak Toyshima. Then... Tuesday, Operators on WMBR's Pipeline! Then... silence.

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Well, well, well, it seems that The Handstand Command, your coterie of Boston Rock Professionals, has reached its fourth year of ROCKING YOUR WORLD. In band years, this must translate to at least 50 human years. Please expect us to buy a sports car and begin chasing our secretary around the desk. To celebrate we've got two(2) big events planned for the month of May. The first one is THIS SATURDAY! The first event takes place this Saturday, May 15, at PAs Lounge in the heart of Union Square. Short sets from all of your Handstand Command favorites; the indie-rock Operators, folk-punk Sinkcharmer, country-indiepop Nice & Easy, garage-rock Asian Babe Alert, and hip-hop friends Big Digits (backed by a live Handstand Command supergroup). Also, free copies of Not Dead Yet, a compilation of new and unreleased songs from many of the Handstand Command bands, will be premiered. Come early (the show gets going at 9), you don't wanna miss nuthin'. The party continues two weeks later at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Inman Square, Cambridge. There will be DJs, dancing, singalong songs with Handstand Command bands and friends, home movies, and a special guest: the Projet Mobillivre-Bookmobile Project, a touring group of book-loving hipster Canadians who teach audiences about book arts and zine making. Prizes provided by Bazaar Bizarre crafters! All to benefit the Bookmobile project! Handstand Command 4th Anniversary! THE DETAILS:

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com The Handstand Command, due to our poor showing in New Hampshire Rock Primary, throw our support behind the one candidate who best represents our views and concerns. Thus, we are proud to endorse Foghat for president. SHOWS: The Plunge Into Death Army have moved their operation underground into the basements of our city. This Saturday (Jan. 31) join them for a party/show at 44 Green Street in Jamaica Plain. Plunge goes on around 10 or so, but show up at 9 for the other bands. All ages, BYOB, $5. As often occurs, The Big Digits will be offering rhymes and sexiness. Then the following Saturday (Feb. 7) join Plunge at the House of Sufferin Succotash in Brighton for another all-ages basement show with the band Oneida. The show starts and ends early: Plunge go on at 7 or so and the show ends at 10. Which is great, because then you can hightail it over to Chinatown to check out an equally rocking show: The latest, greatest sensation, Nice and Easy (featuring Steph from the Operators) at KTV in Chinatown along with Secret Cock. Also, New Yorkers ought to be attending a great show Thursday, February 5, 2004 with THE OPERATORS, Second Story Man, Tincantelephone, and Cynthia Nelson (PS: wish Emily Operator a happy birthday.) To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Seasons Greetings, As usual, Handstand Command, Somerville's very own musical collective, has your holiday season covered: This FRIDAY Scrapple proudly presents its biggest and best Holiday Spectacular ever. Featuring cameos from the local music scene, video footage, rainstick-toting hippies, and, of course, the traditional bondage reindeer, you NEED to be at the Coolidge Corner theater this Friday at midnight. Perhaps we should remind you that we have many fine albums, T-shirts, and posters available for sale (some from our website)? This SATURDAY from 4-10PM you can buy Handstand Command merchandise as well as a whole VFW-ful of other unique DIY crafts at the 3rd annual BAZAAR BIZARRE! We've lengthed the duration of the affair to help deal with the crowds and added some great new features including more celebrity DJs, Theremin Holiday Carols, and a raffle with crazygreat prizes. Bring your wallet. Next Thursday, December 18, Handstand Command's favorite rap duo, the Big Digits, will be rocking the mic (do we say that?) at the Milky Way at the Weekly Dig's Holiday party. If you haven't seen these young gentlemen yet, please do, before they are too busy dating Paris Hilton and Renee Zelwiger to bust fresh rhymes for you. Of course, that is just a warm-up for the show at the Milky Way on the night of FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19. It's an emotional Handstand Command show for us: POSSIBLY THE LAST ANCHORMEN SHOW EVER!!!!!! Mr. Heath Anchorman is leaving town for an unspecified secret mission. Please join your favorite suit-wearing degenerates as they bid a fond farewell to their lead singer. Watch the last time that Chris berates Heath for forgetting his lyrics. Cry as Jef executes his final wince as Tom steps on that god-forsaken wah-wah pedal of his for the 8 kazillionth time. Witness quite possibly the last time that Chris, Jef, Heath, or Tom wears a suit. Joining the tearful goodbye will be The Operators, Asian Babe Alert, and young upstarts, Nice N Easy. Come early! ----- Happy Holidays! -----

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com We think this might be a first: TWO (2) Handstand Command shows on the same evening, this Saturday, November 1, The Day of the Dead. How will you decide? Are you an Anchormen girl or an Operators guy? Perhaps you are both. In Boston proper, The Operators are playing a show with Sophie Drinker, a band that features Cynthia from Retsin and the Naysayer. Also performing will be Dear Nora. This wonderful bill is a co-production of Truth Serum and Eximious Productions and goes on at the Choppin Block. Meanwhile, in salacious Somerville, The Anchormen host Mister Records' desk-rockers, the Young Sexy Assassins and, from Denmark (really), the Beatitudes. The Anchormen go on second, but come early to see how the Danes rock. PA's Lounge is where it's at. Later in the month, check out the Ops at PA's, and Plunge Into Death performing with the world-premiere of a new band featuring Steph from the Operators! Coming in December: The Punk Rock Craft Fair! To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Extry, Extry: Both Sinkcharmer (who are starting work on a short movie soundtrack and EP) and Asian Babe Alert (a guitar and drum duo feat. Tom from the Anchormen) have just been invited to play at the Spoilsport CD Release party, THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at the Midway Cafe in Jamaica Plain. Come join us for a festive night of rock and of not smoking cigarettes. The show'll probably get rolling around 9 or so. PS: Spoilsport will win your heart. And then you can buy their CD. Also: We KNOW you noticed that there were no formal Handstand Commandments for the month of September. Please fret not. Our little music collective has been regrouping, preparing for an all out rock assault this fall. Many shows to come in October and November, we promise. Uh, we'll update the Handstand Command calendar portion of the website soon.

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com In the month of August the Handstand Command has but one show, but oh what a show it shall be: THIS FRIDAY, August 15, Scrapple premieres TROMO, a sci-fi lo-fi techno-popera at the Milky Way Lounge and Lanes along with the multi-media performance piece Travers. Show starts at 10:00 with Scrapple playing at 11:00. Scrapple, known around Boston for its outrageous club shows, now mounts a more ambitious project in Tromo. Tromo expands on the Scrapple-invented genre they call "Popera," which combines narrative song with characters, costumes, and props -- such as huge wiggling asses and giant flying genitalia -- to create their strange and entertaining drama. Opening for Scrapple is TRAVERS, a one-man band tour de force, combining film and live musical performance. Spandex-clad, addicted to Billy Ocean, and forever dancing Shuga Travers performs with all the members of his band via multiple synched projections. It is bizarre; it is wonderful. Please come.

To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com This is the last week of the Handstand Command Stand at the Choppin' Block. Please come and enjoy these bands: 1. CHOO CHOO LA ROUGE: In the future, time travel is commonplace. State-sponsored bands, like the 3033 Grammy Award winners, Choo Choo La Rouge, are required to take a yearly "temporal pilgrimage" to past eras for inspiration. In a routine trip with an itinerary including 1967, 1976, and 1981, a horrible mechanical error occurs leaving the time-traveller/musicians forever stranded in what we know to be the present time. Trapped between the future and the past, CCLR are forced to play dive bars for drink tickets and reviews in the Noise. 2. ORIGAMI: High-energy paper-folding indie-rock from Australia. "That's not a paper swan, THIS is a paper swan." They've played with Sleater-Kinney and the Breeders. And, I guess, they're from the future or robots or something. 3. THE OPERATORS: In the future, cloning is commonplace. Renegade scientists, the Operators,in their secret underground laboratory, work for years to create the perfect rock organism. Combining DNA from the hair of Clint Conley, the nail of Kristen Hersh, and the liver of Kim Deal, the beast they create craves time changes, melodic bass lines, and jangly guitars. Also, somehow, they were on that time machine with Choo Choo La Rouge, so they're playing at the Choppin' Block too. Show starts at 9:30. 21+. $5. Choppin Block, 724 Huntington Ave, Boston. (We'll go back to our once-a-month mailing in July. We promise.)
To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Week 3 of Handstand Command's Stand at the Choppin Block looks like this. Come early, please:
First (around 9:30 or so):

All of these bands are really good, OK?) 724 Huntington Ave.,Boston, MA (617-734-4177), 21+
To: handstandcommand@yahoogroups.com Due to a bout of fever and ague, the Mary Reillys have had to countermand their Handstand Command stand, creating demand for another band. Enter the SINKCHARMER. Sinkcharmer is a bocce-playing, folk-rocking juggernaut of Genesis-covering, funk-free fun. They're kinda like the Mary Reillys, but not as pretty, and none of them has a cold. So, the revised lineup is as follows:
9:30 SHARP - ** SINKCHARMER ** 724 Huntington Ave.,Boston, MA (617-734-4177), 21+

So you know the drill: We're the Handstand Command, we play rock music that you and your mom likes. This month we're playing a series of shows at the Choppin' Block, a divey (in the good way) bar up the street from Mass Art. Be there every Thursday in June, won't you? The Anks (proud parents of a brand new CD) start the residency THIS THURSDAY with the wonderful popsters Spoilsport and Mittens. Week 2 continues with a hip-hop dance freakout starring MR. PLUNGE INTO DEATH along with femcee Cathy Cathodic, new kids on the block BIG DIGITS, and video madness with Travers. ASIAN BABE ALERT welcome, on week 3, The Mary Reillys, The Pee Wee Fist and The In-Out. And who could forget THE OPERATORS? They star Week 4 along with Choo Choo La Rouge, and, straight from Australia (really), Origami. Check out our website (handstandcommand.com, yo) for full details about the residency. ALSO: Come to the Milky Way this Friday for a big blow-out as we say good-bye to our favorite record store in the universe, Hi-Fi Records.
