For Immediate Release
HANDSTAND COMMAND MUSIC COLLECTIVE April 29, 2004 (Somerville, MA) This May, the Handstand Command music collective is throwing a Fourth Anniversary celebration and "family reunion," with Saturday night parties on the 15th and 29th, as well as a special anniversary compilation. As SubterraBoston recently described Handstand Command: "Somerville's ambiguous arts collective...is known for [helping to launch the punk rock craft fair] Bazaar Bizarre as well as being an incestuous breeding ground for bands, sharing funds, equipment, cars, and band members with each other. Bands cover pretty much everything between the garage-punk Conway Twitty-covering Nice & Easy to dance-goth-noisesters Plunge into Death." And after four years of ambiguity and artiness, this collective is ready to party. To kick off the celebration, the pop-punk Anchormen, now spread between New York City and Boston, are reuniting at PA's Lounge in Union Square, Somerville. Their collective-mates will join in short sets from all over the musical map; the indie-rock Operators, folk-punk Sinkcharmer, country-indiepop Nice & Easy, garage-rock Asian Babe Alert, and hip-hop friends Big Digits (backed by a live Handstand Command supergroup) are all scheduled to make appearances. The party continues two weeks later at the Zeitgeist Gallery in Inman Square, Cambridge. There will be DJs, dancing, singalong songs with Handstand Command bands and friends, home movies, and a special guest: the Projet Mobillivre-Bookmobile Project, a travelling exhibit which teaches audiences about book arts and zine making. Crafters from Bazaar Bizarre, the punk rock craft fair Handstand Command helped to launch, will provide hand-made crafty door prizes to raise funds for the Bookmobile at this party. Handstand Command is hosting the Bookmobile in collaboration with Truth Serum Productions. The final hurrah of the anniversary is Not Dead Yet, a compilation of new and unreleased songs from each of the Handstand Command bands, available only at the anniversary parties. Tracks include: "The Look" from the latest recordings of The Operators, whose previous effort, Citizens Band, garnered glowing national reviews and charted steadily in CMJ; a remix of "Tic Toc," the Plunge into Death single originally released by Mister Records; and "Sammy Sosa (I'm in Love with Baseball Now)," a tribute to America's favorite past-time by Asian Babe Alert. Like their last two anniversary bashes (which consisted of sold-out shows and residencies at the Abbey Lounge, the Choppin' Block, and the Milky Way) the 4th year of Handstand Command is not to be missed!
