THE ANCHORMEN
The Anchormen are a punk rock foursome that will make you recall Wire,
the Gang of Four, and the Nervous Eaters. After another pint of Red Hook,
they'll remind you of the Jam, early Devo, and the Buzzcocks. One fan
offers the following equation: "The B-52's + 38 Special * Blink 182 (98
Degrees + 7 Seconds) = The Anchormen." Yet the Anchormen‹comprising Chris
Braiotta, Jef Czekaj (R2-D2 Is an Indie Rocker, the Tardy), Heath Row
(Media Diet), and Tom Scanlon (Scrapple)‹are no mathematically inclined,
test-tube tribute band. No! They are an all-original powerhouse of a musical
group whose songs about anarchism, American history, Chinese restaurants
, and children's books have earned them punk points from Maximumrocknroll,
The Noise, and Ian Mackaye. "The music is manic enough, but the lyrics
are utterly masterful in their inanity," says reviewer Glenn Macdonald
in The War Against Silence. "Lo-fi is a facade behind which these songs
have pop ambitions as high as any."
